Homeschooling High School

                                                   YOU  CAN DO THIS!

When students enter the high school years and families choose to continue homeschooling, it can get a bit complicated. It's complicated, but not scary! We understand there are a lot of new families embarking on the homeschool journey due to the health pandemic and we can help. Here is the bottom line.

If your child may, or will, be attending college after high school, you should prepare for that transition beginning in early 9th grade.
As the parent, you will be required to keep a record of the student's classes, course descriptions and grades for those classes, in order to later assign a GPA for the school year.  Information stored will ultimately create a  transcript that will be required for college level coursework, as well as scholarship information, whether you apply for Bright Futures or private scholarships.

As a homeschooler, your student is able to take classes via FLVS.  You can apply those grades to your student's transcript.  FLVS does not maintain transcripts for homeschoolers.  You are provided with the grade; the parent updates the student's records that are maintained at home.  Also, FLVS also does not issue high school diplomas to homeschoolers, regardless if you have used them for several core classes throughout your homeschooling journey.  FLVS simply provides classes, free of charge, to students residing in their jurisdiction.
*If you need assistance with preparing an official high school transcript, LAL can help. It's a free service for "monthly" students! Otherwise, a $30 fee will apply for transcript preparation.

You have an option, as a county homeschooler, to enroll your student for their 11th and 12th grade high school years, as a dual enrolled student at your local college.  The college level coursework can be applied to their high school transcript, reducing the amount of time they spend completing high school level coursework.  This credit for high school classes also builds toward the student earning an Associates, 2 year college degree.

Ex. Just incase you choose to use the brick and mortar schedule/requirements for classes. Florida public schools require a high school student to complete 4 English/Language Arts Credits (One each year - 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th grades). The parent can provide the class/learning materials for grades 9 and 10.  Dual Enrollment coursework from the local college, English 101 and English 102, can replace the 11th and 12th grade English classes on the student's transcript.  While that coursework is added to the high school transcript by the parent, the college maintains the coursework to apply towards the student's Associate's Degree.  The student will earn 1 high school credit in 4 months (because the work load is considered to be more challenging), per college semester as well as college English credits, which the college records in their records. Those  credits build towards the total of 60 credits that is required for a 2 year, Associate's Degree. It is a win, win for a family with college as a goal!  Find out about Dual Enrollment deadlines on Valencia's website here.

*If you are signed up for homeschooling via a private school, or umbrella school, you are not required to keep records of your student's grades.  Each umbrella, or private school has their own requirements that you must adhere to.
*If you would like to participate in dual enrollment, you will need to change your method of homeschooling in order to take advantage of the local college, dual enrollment for your student. You must be registered with your county as a homeschooler!

Volunteer hours are not required for dual enrollment.  Volunteer hours are required in order to apply for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship. You can read about it here.  The number of hours you volunteer in the community, along with ACT or SAT scores, determines the level of scholarship money that is given to your student.  That documentation, official ACT/SAT scores and volunteer hours, must be submitted to the Home Education office.  *The Home Education office does not require transcript information from homeschoolers, only test information. The transcript will ensure you have met the graduation requirements but only "dual enrollment/local college admissions office" require the transcript.
*In order to qualify for Bright Futures scholarship, the homeschooler must be signed up with the district, county, for 11th and 12th grades.  See their other requirements for homeschoolers in their handbook, on page 8.

If you child will not be attending college, you are not required to prepare transcripts of grades, volunteer log hours or apply with Bright Futures for scholarships and can just continue on homeschooling through the high school years without all the paper trail.  It is suggested you DO keep these records however, as the parent, you are the keeper of record who will issue a diploma to your student.
